HotBot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HotBot is a search engine launched in May 1996 as a service to readers of the online edition of Wired magazine. HotBot was originally based on the web crawlers of Inktomi Corporation . In the early days, HotBot was able to compete with the then market leader Altavista ; both were among the most popular search engines at the time.

In 1998 HotBot was taken over by Lycos . In 1999, HotBot recorded 88 million web pages, which corresponded to 11% of the pages accessible at the time. In September 2002, HotBot recorded 2 billion web pages. The operation of the company's own web crawler was discontinued in 2002 after the competitor Yahoo bought the software supplier Inktomi. Today, HotBot only exists as a front end for the search engines of Yahoo, Lycos' own offer lygo.com and MSN , which can be used optionally. HotBot is therefore only of marginal importance in the search engine market.

The brand HotBot is now (2017) the Australian firm Melbourne IT.
