history

The Lycos Europe was a joint venture of Bertelsmann AG with the American Lycos, Inc. established. From 1997 to 2009 , the CEO of Lycos Europe was Christoph Mohn , who belongs to the Bertelsmann family that owns it.

In 1999 and 2000 Lycos acquired the search engines Fireball and Paperball , the Freemail service Firemail and Firecard from Gruner + Jahr and continued the services in its subsidiary FIREBALL Netsearch GmbH . On June 1, 2004, Lycos converted the Freemail service Firemail to the fee-based service "Lycos Mail", which was discontinued in 2009.

In January 2004 Lycos acquired 100% of the shares in the domain registrar united-domains AG , Starnberg. Lycos also took part in the so-called Worldsbiggestchat , a chat community developed in Denmark . Lycos worked with Yahoo! for chat in Germany. and T-Online together.

In 2007 Lycos Europe launched the Jubii Internet platform . Jubii was bought as the leading internet portal in Denmark in 2000 with worldwide naming rights.

Telefónica owned almost a third of the shares through LE Holding Corporation, a subsidiary of Telefónica. Bertelsmann held 20 percent and Christoph Mohn around 12 percent of the shares. The remaining shares, around 35 percent, were in free float. The two main shareholders were unable to find buyers for Lycos after a loss in the first half of 2008 for the company.

In November 2008 it was decided to liquidate Lycos Europe. Parts of the company were sold, the rest discontinued. At an extraordinary general meeting on December 12, it was decided to distribute 50 million euros from the remaining liquid funds to the shareholders on December 19. On December 13, 2008, Lycos Europe announced that it would sell its domain business through its subsidiary united-domains with more than 1 million domains to the United Internet Group for 34 million euros . On February 15, 2009, all e-mail accounts were deleted. Originally, the European version of a web hosting service called Tripod was also to be discontinued. Instead, however, Tripod was taken over by conversis hosting GmbH on February 15, 2009 and continued to operate. The new owner then began selling Tripod across Europe under the brand name MultiMania, which was originally used in France. Another Lycos service called Lycos iQ , a knowledge community in which users could ask any questions and answer (after registering), was sold to Hubert Burda Media in mid-2009 and renamed COSMiQ in October 2009 .

Since the usage rights for the Lycos brand expired in 2010, the company changed its name to Jubii Europe NV

services

Lycos offered a free web hosting service called Tripod. Compared to a regular, paid web host, this had some restrictions (e.g. advertising or a MySQL database with partially restricted rights).

Since the beginning of 2006 the service Lycos iQ was online, a knowledge community in which users could ask any questions and answer (after registration). In mid-2009, Lycos iQ was sold to Hubert Burda Media and renamed COSMiQ in October 2009 .
