history

Plan of the post-medieval Tarnowo

The hill was settled in the 4th century, and towards the end of the 5th century a Byzantine city was established, temporarily called Zikideva. On this basis, the construction of the Bulgarian fortress Tsarevets began in the 12th century. After the uprising of Vlach, Bulgaria and the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire with its then capital Veliko Tarnowo , the fortress became the most important in Bulgaria. This fortress has often been compared to Rome and Constantinople in all its splendor. In 1393 the fortress was besieged by Ottoman forces for three months before it was finally conquered and burned down on July 17th, the fall of the Bulgarian Empire.

The restoration of Tsarevets Fortress began in 1930 and was completed in 1981 in honor of the 1,300th anniversary of the establishment of the Bulgarian state.

complex

The entire fortress is surrounded by thick walls that are up to 3.6 meters high. The fortress has three entrances or gates. The main gate, which has a drawbridge, is located in the westernmost part of the hill on a narrow rock massif. The second gate is 180 meters from the first and the third, which existed until 1889, is 450 meters further.

Audiovisual show

Tsarevets
Sound and light show at the fortress

The sound and light show (Звук и светлина, Zvuk i svetlina ) is a nighttime performance at the fortress, where the tragic history of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185-1393) is combined with music, colored lights, lasers and church bells. The premiere of this took place in 1985 in honor of the 800th anniversary of the Assen uprising. Hundreds of colored lights and three laser beams represent moments from Bulgarian history, the struggles against the Ottoman hordes, the years of Ottoman rule, the Renaissance, the revolutionary movement and the liberation of Bulgaria.

The audiovisual performance was created by a Bulgarian-Czechoslovak team. The best place to watch this performance is Tsar Asen I Square at the main entrance of Tsarevet , as well as the panoramic location near the Nativity Cathedral .
