The football club Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 e. V. , commonly known as FC Schalke 04 , is a German sports club from the Gelsenkirchen district of Schalke , whose handball department plays in the Oberliga Westfalen .
history
The roots of the handball department lie in the athletics department of the club when the then head of the athletics department of FC Schalke 04 decided to introduce handball as a compensation for his athletes. On November 7, 1926, the official game operation finally began, with a game against the SuS Schalke 96 .
In 1929, FC Schalke 04 became Gaumeister and then played in the highest German league until the beginning of the Second World War .
After the game business collapsed during the war, handball was resumed in the club in 1946. The journalist Paul Schnitzspan became the first department head after the new start .
In 1987 the team was promoted to the Association League and in 1989 to the Oberliga Westfalen . After the direct relegation followed another 16 years in the association league.
Between 2009 and 2014, FC Schalke 04 and SuS Schalke 96 formed the handball game community HSG Schalke 04/96 . This was dissolved again for the 2014/15 season and the teams started as FC Schalke 04 at the beginning of the season.
On May 7, 2015, FC Schalke 04 won the district cup. In the 2015/16 season the team was promoted to the association league and won the district cup again. In the 2017/18 season, he was promoted to the league.
