The Johannisberg colliery was a hard coal mine in Essen - Freisenbruch . The colliery arose from a renaming of the Johannesberg colliery and was only in operation for a few years.

Mining history

On January 1, 1952, the small mine named Zeche Johannesberg in Essen-Steele-Freisenbruch was put into operation. This small mine was owned by Felix Decker. The colliery was operated in tunnel construction . In 1953, 17 miners extracted 6,544 tons of hard coal . In the following year the name was changed to Zeche Johannisberg. At the same time as the renaming, there was a change of ownership. The new owner was the Johannisberg union, later the Wippsterz union took over this small mine. In 1955, 24 miners produced 7,799 tons of hard coal. In 1960, 29 miners extracted 9,232 tons of hard coal. On January 1, 1965 there was another change of ownership, the new owner of the colliery was the Friedrichshöhe trade union. This year the maximum production of the mine was achieved. With 44 miners 15,729 tons of hard coal were extracted. On August 15, 1967, the Johannisberg colliery was shut down.
