The Zeckendorf Towers are a residential complex in Manhattan , New York City . The complex stands out above all for its four 29-storey towers, each 89.38 meters high. The building was completed in 1987. The Zeckendorf Towers are located right next to Union Square and next to 14 Irving Plaza .

history

The complex consists of 670 apartments and was built with the renaissance of Union Square Park in the late 1980s. The complex was designed by the architects Davis, Brody & Associates and named after the well-known real estate agent William Zeckendorf (1905–1976). The building was built on the square that previously housed the S. Klein department store and the old Union Square Hotel. During construction, the Landmarks Preservation Commission dealt intensively with the area and placed several buildings around the towers under monument protection, such as the Union Square Hotel. The construction was one of the most important urban development projects of the 1980s.

In order to realize the project, the property was newly delimited, which met resistance from the new tenants, who were exposed to the dangers of rising rents and prices. Originally, the project was planned with only one tower, because it should initially fit nicely into the urban context. In the end, however, the decision was made for the four towers.

Green Roof

At the height of the seventh floor there is a 14,000 m² roof with plants and green spaces, making it the largest “green roof” in New York. The garden was created in 2010 as part of Michael Bloomberg's green campaign.
