Zeise (family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The family Zeise came from some important people in northern Germany.

history

The family goes back to Christoph Friedrich Zeise (1622–1668), who came from Brzeg . He learned the goldsmith's trade in Gdansk , moved to Copenhagen in 1651 and acquired citizenship there. He had two sons, including Melchior Friedrich (1675–1753), who also worked as a gold beater. His second son Johann (Hans) Christoph (1713–1763) worked as a pharmacist in Aabenraa and had two sons who took up the same profession. William Christopher Zeise was one of his grandchildren, but his son Johann Martin had no children. Thus ended this male line.

Christoph Friedrich Zeise had a younger son named Carl Christian (1685–1756). He worked as a pharmacist in Hadersleben and continued the business of his father-in-law Heinrich Helms. His younger son Christoph Friedrich (1720–1785) took over the pharmacy, married, but had no children. The older son Heinrich Zeise worked as a pastor at the Heiliggeistkirche in Altona . He had thirteen children, many of whom died before their father. The eldest son Peter Theodor (1757–1812) had success as a businessman in Altona, but sold his company due to health problems in 1795. After that, he only pursued his philanthropic interests. He worked for many years as one of the temporary agents of the Reventlow pen. In 1799 he co-founded the Altona Support Institute. When the bank opened a savings bank in 1801 , he took on a position as the institution's cashier for the rest of his life. Peter Theodor died childless and donated his fortune to charitable foundations.

Another son of Heinrich Zeise was Carl Friedrich Zeise (1760-1813). He worked as a pharmacist in Kellinghusen . His son Heinrich Zeise (1793–1863) was like his father a pharmacist and founded his own company. His eldest son of the same name continued this and was also known as a poet. The son Theodor Zeise opened a machine factory in Altona. His sons Alfred (1861–1922) and Peter Theodor (1876–1950) took over the company and developed it into a world-renowned manufacturer of ship screws and propellers. Theodor Zeise had planned that his eldest son Oskar (1860–1925) should also work in the company he founded. However, he did not follow his father's will and finished his studies in natural sciences in 1889 at the University of Königsberg with a doctorate in geology. Then he worked at the Prussian Geological State Institute in Berlin.

Theodor Zeise's youngest daughter Olga Zeise (1864–1945) worked as a pianist. Before the First World War she was active as a soloist in Altona. She created her own compositions, mainly songs, ballads and small works that could be heard in salons. She edited almost all of the pieces herself.
