Simon Roter (* 1516 , 1517 or 1524 in Neumarkt in Silesia ; † December 21, 1595 ) was mayor of the old town of Brandenburg .

Live and act

Simon Roter was born in Neumarkt in Silesia . It is said that he worked as the headmaster of a school and as a town clerk in 1551 before he became mayor of the old town (1584 or 1561 to 1578). He was also a senior and ordinarian of the cities of Mittelmark , Uckermark and the Ruppin district . He is said to have structured the archive of the old town and created a copy book for transcripts of documents. Furthermore, Roter is said to have introduced a city ​​book .

With Gertrud von Saldern , Roter brokered a donation of land in the old town in 1589, on which the Saldria , a Latin school , was set up, as well as a foundation with which poor or poor pupils were granted a scholarship to attend school . The von Saldern-Gymnasium Europaschule sees itself in the tradition of this school .

Simon Roter died in 1595. He was married twice. His first wife was the widow and née Anna Wilmar, who died on April 18, 1557. Roter was married to his second wife Dorothea Schuller for 35 years when she died on November 16, 1593 at the age of 56. He was 76 years old when she died. Simon Roter survived his second wife for about two years until he died in 1595 at the age of 78. Roter had two daughters, one of whom had died in childhood.

In the parish church of St. Gotthardt , where he was buried, there is an epitaph dedicated to Roter and his two wives. The wooden epitaph is divided into three parts. In the lower part, Roter on the left and his two wives and daughters on the right are shown kneeling and praying. The dates of death are noted in writing. The main painting in the center of the picture, which is flanked by columns , shows the raising of Lazarus . On top there is an aedicula in which the risen Jesus Christ is depicted with a cross. The epitaph is dated to 1584, so it was made long before the death of Simon Roter.
