Gertrud von Saldern (* March 1518 in the Mark Brandenburg , † May 27, 1595 in Magdeburg ), born von Hake , was a Brandenburg school donor .

Live and act

Gertrud came from the Brandenburg noble family von Hake. She was the educator of the daughters of Elector Joachim II. At court in Berlin she met the electoral councilor and chief chamberlain Matthias von Saldern , her husband. The family resided in Plaue Castle . Another property was the Plattenburg in the Prignitz .

For 1000  Reichstaler from the proceeds of the sale of a property in Berlin that belonged to Gertrud, the family acquired the former bishop's court of the Diocese of Brandenburg on Gotthardtkirchplatz in the old town of Brandenburg in 1567 . This should serve as a representative family seat. In 1575 her husband died. Gertrud von Saldern had to fight for "hauß vnndt hoff zu Brandenburgk" in court as her inheritance against family members.

At the mediation of the mayor of the old town, Simon Roter , who in turn was rector , the Lutheran transferred in 1589 to the city near the St. Gotthardt church that the Saldern School in Brandenburg , a modern Latin school , "to the glory of God and to preserve the evangelical word" set up. Saldersche and other scholarship holders should live in the school . Noble children in particular should be admitted to school, but a few poor ones. The school opened in 1591.

In addition, Gertrud von Saldern donates 10,000 Reichstaler for three-year scholarships for “a number of young aristocrats”, if possible “from my friendship”, who should study “at approved universities in Germany” for three years from the interest due.

Gertrud von Saldern died on May 27, 1595 in Magdeburg and was buried there in the St.-Ulrich-und-Levin church .

The von Saldern-Gymnasium Europaschule sees itself in the tradition of its school foundation .

Honors
