The von Saldern-Gymnasium Europaschule is the largest grammar school and the only European school in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel . It sees itself in the tradition of Saldria , a school institution that was founded in the old town of Brandenburg in the early modern period and existed in Brandenburg until the end of the Second World War . The grammar school was founded in 1991 as the Neustadt grammar school . The main building of the school is listed as a monument .

history

The school house that we moved into in 1995

In 1589, the widow Gertrud von Saldern (nee von Hake ), with the mediation of the mayor and rector Simon Roter, transferred a plot of land with buildings to accommodate the Latin school to the old town of Brandenburg at Gotthardtkirchplatz 9 and 10 . This school has been called Saldria ever since.

In 1797 the Saldria was merged with the New Town School of Academics to form the United High School of the Old and New Town with both historical locations. The school merger was dissolved again in 1817 and the Saldria became a citizen school.

From 1865 to 1867 a new school building was opened and moved into at the Salzhof , near the St. Johannis church . This Von Saldern'sche Realgymnasium existed until 1945, but was completely destroyed by bombs shortly before the end of the Second World War. Two teachers and a student from the school died.

After 1945 the continuity of the school tradition was interrupted. A Saldern school did not exist for about 50 years. Schools at which one could take one's Abitur in Brandenburg were the Pushkin Oberschule (later renamed as Dr. Theodor-Neubauer-Oberschule) and the Johann-Wolfgang-von-Goethe-Oberschule. The Neubauerschule lost its Abitur level in the 1950s, while the Goetheschule was unstructured into an extended secondary school (EOS).

After the political change in 1989/90, the school landscape in the re-established state of Brandenburg was changed and three grammar schools were founded. The former EOS Johann Wolfgang von Goethe became the newly founded grammar school Neustadt. In addition to the facility on Wredowplatz, the teaching staff and the students of the Goetheschule, the grammar school took over the school building of the former Polytechnic Oberschule Dr. Theodor Neubauer on the Cathedral Island of Brandenburg , which is now home to the Evangelical High School at Brandenburg Cathedral . The first, still acting headmaster of the grammar school was Harry Münchow, deputy Barbara Jechow. Münchow was replaced on February 1, 1993 by Hanswalter Werner.

Since when the schools were re-established in 1991 they lost their previous names, which were preserved in the GDR , a new name was discussed at the Neustadt grammar school. Essential suggestions were, as preferred by the student body, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the name von Saldern, which is traditional in Brandenburg. Ultimately, the school conference decided to propose the name of Saldern-Gymnasium Brandenburg to the city council . This proposal was adopted on September 29, 1993. From that day on, the official name was Saldern-Gymnasium Brandenburg, Städtisches Gymnasium.

Since the capacities in the two school buildings, which were relatively far apart, were not sufficient, at the end of the school year 1994/95 the buildings were replaced by the school building on Franz-Ziegler-Straße with the Theodor-Fontane-School , which took over the school building on Wredowplatz, and the comprehensive school "Franz-Ziegler", which moved to the cathedral island. The Franz-Ziegler-Schule was built from 1906 to 1908 as a double school outside the development of the new town of Brandenburg . The 3rd and 4th community school were housed in it. In 1918 these community schools were named Jahnschule and Kaiser-Friedrich-Schule. Just four years later, the entire school was named Franz Zieglers .

Even after the move, however, the premises on Wredowplatz were still used by the grammar school. Art lessons continue to take place in the building of the Wredow School of Drawing , a traditional art school. In the following years the school infrastructure was continuously expanded. On March 7, 1996, an extension with five specialist rooms for science subjects and other rooms was inaugurated. In 1999 the old boiler house in the school yard was torn down. A municipal three-field hall was built on Wiesenweg from 2002 to 2003 , which is used, among other things, for school sports at the Salderngymnasium. Every year on March 31, there is a commemorative event for the teachers Heinrich Richter and Friedrich Kiehr and the pupil Karl-Heinz Wehn who were killed by heavy bombs in the von Saldern'sche Realgymnasium am Salzhof shortly before the end of the Second World War.

Building

Courtyard side of the main building

The historic and listed school building in Franz-Ziegler-Straße is a historic brick building made of red and unplastered bricks. It is three-storey and mirror-symmetrical and consists of three or five wings . The schoolyard faces north. The building is structured in many ways. Several risalites and tower-like corner buildings are striking . The windows are rectangular , round-arched , basket-arched or segmented arched of various sizes, whereby they are partially grouped three times in larger panels . The roof is a mansard roof , which is covered with red beaver tails .

The new extension is unadorned using a concrete and glass construction. It is structurally connected to the main building via a skyway , which starts on the first floor. In the school yard opposite the main building there is a flat school building, in which the student café , rooms for the student meals and the school radio are located. Behind this low-rise building is the communal sports field shared by the school and the three-field hall.
