history

Edition 19/1813 of the newspaper of the department of the Weser estuaries

After the formerly sovereign Hanseatic city of Bremen was forcibly incorporated into the French Empire on January 1, 1811 and became the capital of the newly created French Département des Bouches du Weser , on February 1, 1812 the ordinance was issued that from now on only one newspaper was allowed to appear in the entire department , who published articles of political content. The very next day the first edition of the new newspaper of the department of the Weser estuaries appeared , a bilingual newspaper that was the official mouthpiece of the French authorities. In the first edition it was announced that any other form of collecting and publishing news and information was from now on prohibited. As a result, the Bremer Zeitung , which had been printed since 1741, had to cease publication.

In addition to insignificant and informative foreign reports, the new newspaper mainly reported on military events, whereby the events were usually presented distorted with propaganda intentions in favor of France. The information value of the Journals du Département des Bouches du Weser was correspondingly low.

After the first liberation of Bremen by the Russian general Friedrich Karl von Tettenborn on October 15, the journal did not appear for a few days. Since Tettenborn withdrew from the city on October 18th, French troops under General Lauberdière occupied Bremen again on October 21st. On October 22nd, the Journal appeared again with issue number 166 . However, Lauberdière received the news of Napoleon's defeat at Leipzig on the 25th , after which he decided to evacuate Bremen. With the end of the French occupation, number 168 appeared on October 26th as the last edition of the newspaper of the department of the Weser estuaries.
