location

The furnace is in Judendorf-Straßengel at Fabriksstrasse 4 (–6) on the premises of the chemical company "Graier GmbH"

history

In 1868 Ignaz Walter bought a chalk mill on a side arm of the Mur , which no longer exists , and converted it into a cement factory. The company grew rapidly, producing 35,000 to 48,000 quintals of cement a year between 1871 and 1874 . After Walter's death in 1882, the factory came into the possession of Josef Priebsch, who primarily had Portland cement manufactured there. Priebsch had the cement kiln, which is still preserved today, built probably in 1883 or a little later. In 1898 the factory produced around 10,000 tons of Portland cement, the majority of which was used for public and private buildings in Graz . Between 1905 and 1910 the plant went to the "Perlmooser Zementfabriks AG". In 1955, the company "Graier GmbH" acquired the plant and converted it into a chemical factory. The former cement kiln is used as a silo for water glass . Except for the cement kiln, none of the cement factory's original buildings have survived today.

description

The cement kiln consists of an oblong-rectangular, block-like structure, the actual furnace floor, which is four, with refractory bricks lined Zementhochöfen encloses. The kiln floor consists of brickwork and is around 18 meters long and around 5 meters wide. At the height of the gout level , around 14.5 meters above the ground, there is a cornice panel which protrudes from precast concrete parts on consoles . This plate has a length of about 20 meters and a width of about 7 meters. The wooden upper floor is covered by a hipped roof on supports . On one of the narrow side walls there is a wooden porch with a ladder-shaped staircase. On the same wall there is also a small chimney that was previously used to remove smoke and heat from the topsoil.
