Zenodotos of Troizen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zenodotus of Troizen ( Greek  Ζηνόδοτος Zenodotus , Latinized Zenodotus Troezenius ) was an out Troizen derived ancient Greek historian of the Hellenistic period. Its lifetime cannot be precisely determined. It must have been in the period between the early 3rd century BC. BC and the time of Marcus Terentius Varro , the source template of Dionysius of Halicarnassus , who mentioned Zenodotus.

Zenodotos is known as the author of a work on Roman history that has only survived in fragments. The title is unknown. According to the traditional quotations, Zenodotus treated the early history of Italy and Rome. The work is mentioned with regard to the " Rape of the Sabine Women " by the historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus, the biographer Plutarch and the late antique grammarian Solinus . However, it is unlikely that these authors consulted Zenodotus directly; presumably they used intermediate sources, in the case of Dionysius quite certainly Varro.
