Zenon Sdougos

Zenon N. Sdougos (* 1916 ; † 2005 in London ) was a Greek administrative officer and UN functionary.

Life

Zenon Sdougos began his professional career as a nautical officer in the Greek merchant navy . He later joined the coast guard of his home country, where he retired in 1961 with the rank of captain . In the same year he took up a position at the headquarters of the International Maritime Organization . There he was employed in the ship safety department, which he later took over as head. In 1976 Sdougos switched to the Association of Greek Shipowners as a consultant. Sdougos is best known as one of the main initiators of the Global Maritime Distress Safety System , a worldwide distress and safety radio system .

Awards

In 1990 Sdougos received the International Maritime Prize of the International Maritime Organization for his work in the field of ship safety .
