Central call of the car insurers

Area of responsibility

The central call of the car insurers has existed since 1972 and, according to Section 8a of the Compulsory Insurance Act (PflVG), is the legally recognized information center in Germany for identifying the motor vehicle liability insurer who is responsible for the damaging vehicle or (for foreign insurers) the responsible regulatory officer in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its task is to inform the injured party of the name and address of the opposing insurer in order to facilitate the assertion of claims for damages by the injured party.

The central call system uses the free service number 0800 250 260 0 and an Internet form to determine the vehicle liability insurance of the other party after a traffic accident. The investigation is carried out for persons who can demonstrate a legitimate interest, i.e. for accident victims and their representatives or organizations that are involved in claims settlement .

Function in accidents abroad

In the event of a traffic accident abroad with a vehicle registered in the European Economic Area or Switzerland , the so-called claims settlement officer responsible in Germany is determined in addition to the foreign insurer. All European insurers have claims regulators in every member state of the European Union. In the case of accidents abroad, your task is to enable the handling and settlement of a traffic accident in the victim's native language. The central number of the car insurers can be reached around the clock, 365 days a year. Callers from abroad can reach the car insurers' central number on +49 (40) 300 330 300 Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In some EU countries, it is possible to query the motor vehicle liability insurer and the claims settlement officer in the Federal Republic of Germany directly via a website. For these countries, the opposing motor vehicle liability insurance and the responsible claims settlement officer can be determined by entering the registration number and the accident date:

If the motor vehicle liability insurer is already known, the claims representative of the country of residence can be determined in the following countries:
