Truing stand

Truing stand
Single stand

A truing stand is an assembly stand for holding a spoked wheel (bicycle or motorcycle) for aligning ( centering ) bicycle rims after assembly or if there is a lateral or vertical runout. The stand tensions the hub of the spoked wheel and holds it in a fixed position during the centering process.

A truing stand is characterized by two centrically tensioning bars between which the hub is held. A distinction is made between two systems in addition to lateral clamping when holding the hub.

  • an upwardly open, mostly prismatic receptacle in which the axis ends rest, or
  • a three-point clamping in which the axis ends are clamped against a stop on the circumference.

Different hub types require aids such as suitable adapters to accommodate them in the truing stand.

Measuring device

With a measuring device attached in the middle of the bracket, the rim can be automatically centered easily and without calculation. A dynamic display, which is placed on the rim, shows the position of the rim in relation to the hub as well as the concentricity deviations during the entire centering process.

Truing stands have been registered with the German and European patent offices.

The centering process

During the centering process, the spokes of the wheel are pretensioned by turning the spoke nipples on the thread of the spokes with a nipple tensioner . In addition to the spoke tension, the aim is to minimize the lateral and vertical runout of the rim for concentricity within tolerances.

Modern or newer truing stands do not require any calculation or measurement of the components and can center the rim directly to the center. A centering gauge is no longer required.

In the case of wheel holders, the measuring device must first be set to the desired value by means of calculation, measurement of the components or by means of procedures in order to achieve the desired rim position. The result should be checked with a centering gauge.

Ordinary wheel holders

Wheel holder

Non-centric tensioning systems are popularly referred to as truing stands, whereby these only fulfill the function of a wheel mount or wheel holder.

A simpler version, which is also known as the truing stand, is the single stand model in which the wheel is attached to one side of the hub. The position of the rim must also be checked here on the centering gauge.
