The Center for Astronomy of the University of Heidelberg (ZAH) was founded on January 1, 2005 as a merger of the previous state research institutions - Astronomisches Rechen-Institut (ARI) and Landessternwarte Heidelberg-Königstuhl (LSW) - with the Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (ITA) of the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg founded.

SDSS J102915 172927 discovered by the ZAH

The ZAH is dedicated to basic research in the field of astronomy and astrophysics , such as the formation of planetary systems and galaxies or the understanding of dark matter. With the merger, the research capacities of the state and the university will be merged into a center of excellence for astronomy at the university. The center attracted attention in 2011 when the star SDSS J102915 + 172927 was discovered “which should not exist” because it consists almost exclusively of hydrogen and helium . The director is currently (2012) the astrophysicist Joachim Wambsganß .
