Center for knowledge and technology transfer in medicine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Center for Knowledge and Technology Transfer in Medicine ( ZWT ) in Graz is the first part of the new campus of the Medical University of Graz. It is a technology and research center for life sciences (human technology) on a university campus with independent companies as tenants, which is unique in this form in Austria.

Goals and Background

As the first technology and research center in Austria, the ZWT is structurally and organizationally fully integrated into a university campus. The aim is to strengthen cooperation between business and medicine.

The ZWT is one of the impulse centers in Styria , which focus on evaluated areas of strength in the Styrian economy. Human technology is one such strength field that has grown significantly in recent years. Around 14,800 employees work in this branch in Styria, with annual sales of 2.9 billion euros.

The ZWT is the first completed part of the Med Campus , for which construction work has been ongoing since 2012. This creates a new university location in Graz, in which the institutes and administrative units of the Medical University of Graz, which were previously spread across the city, will be given a new location in the vicinity of the LKH University Hospital .

The ZWT was built and operated by the ZWT-GmbH, which is owned by the Styrian Economic Development Agency (SFG) and the Medical University. Co-financing comes from subsidies from the State of Styria and the European Union (EFRE funds), with 24 million euros invested in the construction.

Tenant

The ZWT has 10,800 square meters of laboratory and office space. Since the ZWT opened in May 2014, 250 new jobs have been created in the ZWT. The tenants include commercial shares of the institutes from the Medical University of Graz, as well as HEALTH - the Institute for Biomedicine and Health Sciences of Joanneum Research , but also existing companies as well as headquarters and competence centers of international companies in the field of life sciences (human technology), such as B. Braun Melsungen AG and Meon Medical Solutions GmbH. The Graz biobank with around six million biological samples is also housed at the ZWT, as is the European headquarters of the research infrastructure for biobanks and biomolecular resources BBMRI-ERIC.

With the Life Science Incubator at the ZWT there is a separate area for innovative founders from the life science sector. So that research results from pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and medical technology can be professionally implemented on the market, the founders at the ZWT have access to subsidized laboratory and office space and infrastructure as well as know-how. The aim is to create a sustainable bridge between science and business.
