Cernation , also cernation ( French: cerner , to encircle), is the enclosure of a location, in particular a fortress or an island, with troops and the resulting barrier to the outside. The siege usually precedes the siege . Sometimes the attacker restricts himself to a sheer curtailment in order to starve the place out. The line around the fortress, in which the corps is located, is called the border line. They are secured by entrenchments, in the past even by a continuous line of circumvallation .
