Atomizer (spectroscopy)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An atomizer is a component of a spectrometer ( AAS / atomic absorption spectroscopy, ICP-OES , ICP-MS ), with the help of which a fine mist is generated from a liquid (principle of surface enlargement). The mist gets into a unit of the spectrometer (flame, inductively coupled plasma ), in which chemical elements dissolved in the liquid are atomized or ionized .

One distinguishes between:

  • self-priming atomizers (use of an auxiliary atomizer gas, mostly in the AAS) and
  • Atomizers that work with the aid of a feed pump (Cross Flow, Miramist, Meinhard (is also self-priming!), Mainly in ICP techniques).
