Zhou Xingsi

Zhou Xingsi ( Chinese  周興嗣 , * 469 in Xiang , China ; † 521) was a court scholar at the court of Emperor Wu (464-549) and author of the thousand-character classic .

Life

He was born in the year 469 in Xiang in the Chinese Empire . At the age of thirteen he traveled 300 km southeast to the capital Jiankang, which was then still under the rule of the Qi dynasty (479–502), and devoted himself to studying literature there.

Through his acquaintance with the governor of Wuxing 吳興 , he became an assistant to the district administration. When he submitted a "Rhapsody on Peace" on the occasion of the founding of the Liang Dynasty , the new emperor Wu was so impressed that he accepted him into the entourage of his younger brother Xiao Xiu 蕭 秀 (475-518). After another literary masterpiece, he won the emperor's esteem and was promoted to the imperial court, where he became Minister of Literature and Education.

Around the year 510 he was commissioned by the emperor to write the thousand-character classic .

In 514 he became palace master, which allowed him to move freely through the palace.
