The cigar maker monument is a monument on the square in front of the town hall in the city of Achim . The monument, unveiled in 1996, commemorates the heyday of cigar manufacturing in Achim from 1833.

In 1994 the city of Achim announced a sculpting competition for a monument that was to commemorate the city's cigar industry. The Bremen sculptor Christian Huba received the first prize in the competition.

In addition to the monument to the cigar makers, there is another monument in the city, which is supposed to commemorate that time, the "Cigar Reader Monument". The city administration names the monument as one of the “sights” of the city. There are monuments u. a. also in Bremen and Bünde .

Description of the monument

The four-part composition of bronze figures and marble reliefs tells the story of the cigar makers. The work shows a house as a symbol of the city of Achim. The economic and social relevance of cigar production is depicted in four partial images, with two marble reliefs addressing the local history, while the two bronze figures depict the plantation worker overseas and the end consumer. The four individual parts are arranged accordingly on a common base clad with sheet brass. The dimensions are 1.70 m × 1.70 m × 2.30 m. The marble comes from the Untersberg quarries in Salzburg. The bronze figures were cast by the Rieke art foundry in Worpswede .
