The Cistercian Abbey Jequitibá (Latin Abbatia BMV Divini Pastoris Matris ) has been a Brazilian monastery in Mundo Novo, Bahia , Diocese of Ruy Barbosa since 1939 .

history

The Austrian Cistercian Abbey Stift Schlierbach founded the Abadia Nossa Senhora Mãe do Divino Pastor (“Our Lady of the Good Shepherd”) monastery in Jequitibá, Mundo Novo, 330 km west of Salvador (Bahia) in 1939 , which was elevated to an abbey in 1950 . The important abbot Alois Wiesinger (1885–1955) from Schlierbach was decisive for the founding of the monastery. He sent Father Alfred Haasler (born August 5, 1907 in Heiligenkreuz ; † 1997) as a missionary to Brazil in 1938 and succeeded him in 1939 to found the monastery, not least around to avoid arrest by the National Socialists . Later in 1966, Father Josef Hehenberger from Schlierbach went to Brazil as a missionary. After serving in the Jequitibá monastery, he became a pastor in Jacobina (Bahia) and founded the youth protection center Fazendinha. The monastery was committed to the population through educational and social work, as well as medical care.
