Agrigento Cistercian Abbey
The Cistercian Abbey Agrigento (also: Santo Spirito ) is since 1295 the monastery of Cistercian nuns in Agrigento in Sicily .
history
The nunnery Beata Maria Virginis et Sancti Spiritus ("the Virgin Mary and the Holy Spirit") founded in 1295 in what is now the center of Agrigento, popularly known as "Bataranni" (from: Badia grande = great abbey), was placed under Casamari Monastery in 1299 , a supervision that lasted until 1572. In 1866 the monastery was officially converted into an orphanage and poor house, but the nuns were able to stay on site this way. When the existence of the convent was endangered after the Second World War, the Cistercian abbey of San Severino Marche sent three nuns to reinforce it. In 1964 the cloister was restored. The buildings of the listed monastery (restored in 1989) also house an old people's home and a museum. Peugniez speaks of one of the most beautiful monasteries in Sicily.
