The monastery of Santa María de Barria in the hamlet of Barria , village of Narvaja , municipality of San Millán , province of Álava (25 km northeast of Vitoria-Gasteiz ), which existed since 1053, became a Cistercian monastery in 1235. In 1973 the convent changed to Oyón a few kilometers north of Logroño , keeping the name , but the number of nuns fell below a critical limit, so that the remaining sisters gave up the place in 2012 and joined the Lazkao monastery . The former monastery building in Barria is now a youth hostel. The buildings in Oyón are used for other purposes.
