Cistercian Convent of Lazkao

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Monastery of Lazkao has been a monastery of the Cistercian women in Lazkao (Spanish: Lazcano), province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Country in Spain , since 1646 .

history

Doña María de Lazkano, the widow of Admiral Antonio de Oquendo , founded the Santa Ana nunnery in Lazkao near Beasain , 40 km southwest of San Sebastián , in 1646 , and was a nun there herself from 1658 until her death in 1664. The monastery was settled by the Bernardas Recoletas of the reformed monastery of Santa Ana in Valladolid , but later joined the General Observance of the Cistercians. The showpieces of the baroque church, consecrated in 1716, are three winged altars. The monastery (on Elosegi Kalea Street ) has been a listed building since 1994. In 2012 the monastery took on the remaining convent of the Barria Monastery . The abbess of the currently 20 nuns is Kandida Saratxaga (also abbot president of the congregation).
