Geert van Keulen

Geert van Keulen (born October 11, 1943 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch composer, conductor, clarinetist and music teacher.

Van Keulen studied clarinet and bass clarinet at the Amsterdamse Muzieklyceum, as well as composition with Robert Heppener , instrumentation with Hans Henkemans and orchestral conducting with Anton Kersjes and David Zinman . Since 1966 he has been a bass clarinetist in the Concertgebouw Orchestra . In addition, he directed the Nederlands Blazer Ensemble from 1966 to 1988 and worked as a musician, conductor and organizer in chamber music performances. From 1978 to 1995 he taught composition and instrumentation at the Amsterdam Conservatory .

Van Keulen composed chamber music, works for solo instruments, instrumental concerts, choral and orchestral works. In 1986 his opera Aan de Wannsee was written based on a libretto by Louis Ferron . On behalf of the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst , he composed Armonia for string orchestra in 1988 ; the work was premiered in 1990 by the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly . The Tympan pour grand orchester, completed in 1990, was commissioned by the Concertgebouw Orchestra . Van Keulen wrote Fingers for tenor saxophone and orchestra for saxophonist Arno Bornkamp in 1991, and a horn concerto for Jacob Slagter in 2001.
