history

The St. Bernard Sisters, who have been living in Santander since 1894 , built a monastery there in Paseo Canalejas (today demolished), from which they moved to a new building in 1987, 23 km southeast, in the solitude of Liérganes (Los Prados district). The monastery is called Monasterio Cistercense Nostra Señora del Río y San José ("Maria River and Saint Joseph") or Monasterio Cisterciense de San José de Liérganes . There the nuns make candles for their maintenance. The convent belongs to the Cistercian Congregation of San Bernardo (CCSB) .
