history
García Fernández de Villamayor (1170-1241), relative of the abbess of the Las Huelgas monastery , donated the nunnery Monasterio de Santa María la Real in Villamayor de los Montes (10 kilometers north of Lerma ) on the site of the former monastery of San Vicente in 1228 . From 1617 to 1627 the convent moved to Lerma, but then returned and continues to exist there today. The convent belongs to the Cistercian Congregation of San Bernardo (CCSB) . The church is Gothic, the cloister is praised by Peugniez as “magnifique”.
