Zona alba
The Zona alba (also known as the white line or Linea alba unguis ) is a low-pigment connection layer on the hoof or claw between the wall and the sole. The zona alba is formed by the leaflet horn of the wall segment . Between these horn leaflets, at the sole-side end of the wall epidermis, the interlabular horn is formed, which structurally represents the tubular horn, as it is formed on small papillae. Some authors include the innermost, less pigmented layer of the crown horn in the zona alba .
The nails are hammered into the zona alba during shoeing .
