The Pilsen zoo is part of the zoological and botanical garden of the city of Pilsen , originally Zoologická a botanická zahrada města Plzně .

History and location

Old farmhouse in the upper part of the zoo

The zoo in Pilsen was founded on a relatively small area in 1926. In 1961 the botanical garden was opened. In 1963 the zoo moved next to the botanical garden. The two institutions have been run together since 1981. The 21 hectare facility belongs to the city.

The zoological and botanical gardens are located north-west across the Mies river on a steep slope when viewed from downtown Pilsen . The Akva-Tera reptile zoo, which is also part of the zoo , is in the city center.

The main entrance to the zoo is near the river bank, and the parking lot is also there. The facility can also be reached by tram , which runs along a busy arterial road on the eastern part of the facility. From there you can get to the Botanical Garden.

Between the botanical garden and the zoo there is an amphitheater with 7000 fixed seats and additional places on the lawn. Open-air events take place here. The zoo uses the amphitheater for the bird of prey show in the summer months.

zoo

The zoo is west of the amphitheater. It has been transformed into a geozoo in recent years. In the upper part of the zoo are the enclosures of the North America part and the historical farm "Lüftnerka" with some old breeds of domestic animals. A dinosaur park has been set up in a part separated from the zoo. There are also only a few enclosures on the steep slope itself, on the outer western edge there is a large enclosure for brown bears on the steep slope.

In the lower part, next to the amphitheater, there is the reptile house with the Komodo dragon and the Australian part of the zoo. There are two older buildings opposite the main entrance. African nocturnal animals are shown in one building, Madagascar's fauna in the other. This is followed by the Africa facility, which opened in 2010, towards the river, and towards the mountain, the fauna of South America is shown. The animal world of Asia is presented further to the west. At the edge in the transition to the steep slope with bison and brown bear in the zoo area European forests the transition to the North American part begins.

The inventory on December 31, 2013 counted 1834 mammals in 245 species, 2544 birds in 506 species and 2328 reptiles in 279 species. The number of visitors is around 450,000 per year.

The zoo maintains the European stud book for gray lemurs and fat-tailed lemurs .
