history

Headquarters in Stendal

In 1870 Wilhelm Closer founded the mechanical workshops based in Stendal, whose first products were sewing machines, velocipedes and running bikes . These were expanded to include safes and safes that were exported worldwide.

After the First World War , engineer Otto Zorn took over the production. As a trained gunsmith , he mainly dealt with firearms technology .

The factory was largely destroyed during the Second World War . Gerhard Zorn ran the company in the post-war years as a supplier for the Deutsche Reichsbahn .

In 1955, Gerhard Zorn laid the foundation stone for the company's main business area with the development and manufacture of hardness testers for metals and plastics. The specialization enabled the company to oppose expropriation in the former GDR under the name 'Gerhard Zorn Mechanische Werkstätten' and remained in family ownership for the entire period.

In 1980 the current managing director Bernd Zorn took over the company. The company employed 12 people, the maximum permitted size for a craft business in the GDR. Material testing devices for rubber and steel were manufactured for domestic use as well as for export to the socialist economic area and western countries. By generating foreign currency, participation in international trade fairs was possible even before the fall of the Berlin Wall . It has been exported to 36 countries. For example, rubber hardness testers were supplied to the rubber industry in South America.

Soil compaction testing devices have been developed and manufactured since 1991. So-called lightweight drop weight devices have been making it easier for construction companies to test the subsoil since then. Material testing devices and medical technology are also manufactured.

Since 2016 the company has been operating under the name 'Zorn Instruments GmbH & Co. KG'

To date, more than 35,000 test devices and instruments have been delivered all over the world.
