A breeding ring is a form of collective animal breeding in which several breeders of a breed try to avoid inbreeding and, if necessary, achieve defined breeding goals through a systematic exchange of animals. The concept is used in the conservation breeding of rare or endangered livestock breeds.

Animal species

Breeding rings exist for various farm animals, initially for bees , later also for domestic pigs , turkeys , geese and, in recent years, increasingly for domestic chickens . Similar conservation breeding programs exist for wild animals in zoos .

Action

There is usually an annual rotation of animals from and to the respective breeding units. The selection of breeding animals is done according to fixed criteria, the documentation is done in a breeding book. Depending on the species and breeding concept, a rotation is carried out by passing on male animals, female animals ( stick mothers ) or hatching eggs.
