25 years of VEB Zuckerfabrik-Delitzsch

After the war, the facilities at the plant, which was located in the Soviet occupation zone , were dismantled and taken to the Soviet Union as reparations . After planning to rebuild the plant for white sugar production in 1952, the new plant was opened in 1955, which in 1966 became part of the Zeitz combine. In 1971 the factory had started operating at full capacity and was named “best company” of the 42 GDR companies in the sugar-producing industry. At the beginning of the 1980s, the plant had grown to become the largest in its branch and became an independent combine.

After the turnaround, the company was bought by Südzucker AG and converted into Südzucker GmbH , Zeitz. The plant was completely modernized and restructured. Südzucker ceased operations at the end of 2000.

Products

Initially, the plant mainly produced raw sugar from sugar beet. After the Second World War, production was switched to white sugar and sugar cane from Cuba was added as a raw material. Animal feed was produced from the waste. In the first year of production in 1889, 24,000 tonnes of beet and 265 tonnes per day were processed, in 1998 over 7,000 tonnes of sugar beet were processed and a total of 48,200 tonnes of white sugar was obtained from 555,000 tonnes of sugar beet.

Current situation

The factory complex is now partially a listed building. There is a biogas plant on the site.
