The term access society is a German translation of the English term access society . In the social sciences it has two meanings:

  • The American sociologist Jonathan Simon coined the term in the late 1980s for a control practice that only allows adapted access to society.

Version of Simon

According to Simon, the access society only grants the individual access to a certain social system if he does not exceed a certain risk potential or does not even show certain risk behaviors (such as drug consumption ).

Version of Rifkin

In the emerging access society , according to Rifkin, quick access to ideas, goods and services is more important than permanent and cumbersome possession. This understanding of the term was also taken up by other authors in Germany . Carsharing is mentioned as an example .
