An additional branch is a downstream branch or secondary branch in the approximate direction of growth of the branch or branch to be cut. When shortening the latter, the subordinate branch or the secondary branch is left standing in order to accelerate the overflow of the cut surface. This takes over the function of the shortened branch or twig and continues the growth of the tree. It is important that the size difference between the branch / branch removed and the downstream branch or the minor axis is not too great. According to the ZTV tree care, the diameter of the tension should be a third of the branch to be shortened at the interface.
One also speaks of "deriving from the drawer" or "diverting to a secondary branch" or "cut to the drawer", which also means that further growth should take place in the drawer and that this takes over the function of the previous leading drive.
