Descaler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A scale washer is part of a hot rolling mill for cleaning steel. The descaler (English: descaler or scale breaker ) is used to remove the scale (i.e. impurities of iron oxide on the surface) by high water pressure in order to prevent the iron oxide from rolling into the material. Scale washers are used in particular in hot strip mills, but also in the production of heavy plate, wire or profiles and consist of one or more bars into which special nozzles are inserted so that they apply the water jet at an angle to the material in order to blow off the scale.

Descaling is also becoming increasingly important in forging lines. The scale washer has become indispensable, especially in the manufacture of railway wheels in fully automated production lines.

Typical pressures in scale washers are 100–400 bar.

Finished hot strip is descaled by pickling or sandblasting .
