To the candle
The artist bar Zur Kerze was originally an exhibition space for Bonn artists in the southern part of the city at Königstrasse 25-27. Founded in the post-war years, the restaurant existed for 50 years until 1998.
Emmy Meurer, the second wife of the Bonn painter Ernst Meurer , applied to the city administration for a serving license and from 1950 turned the gallery into a meeting point for the entire “art scene” in the Bonn area. Here by candlelight, the Thursday Society , art historians around Heinrich Lützeler , theater people around the artistic director Karl Pempelfort , museum people around the director of the municipal art collection Walter Holzhausen and interested citizens, students, and local and federal politicians sat together, sometimes until 5 a.m.
From 1980 the restaurant was taken over by restaurateur Roland Korndörfer. He continued the tradition of changing exhibitions of talented young painters until it was closed in 1998.
