The Surmang Kagyu tradition ( Tib .: zur mang bka 'brgyud ) is a branch of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism that emerged in the 14th century . The 5th Karmapa Deshin Shegpa imparted the tantric teachings of the "three lines of whispered teachings" to his disciple Mase Togden Lodrö Rinchen (Tib .: rma se rtogs ldan merely gros rin chen ; 1386–?), Who was considered to be the embodiment of Siddha Tilopa . After realizing these teachings, Mase Togden Lodrö Rinchen built the Pel Trashi Surmang Shedrub Ling monastery in Kham , the headquarters of the Surmang- Kagyu. The current lineage holder of this tradition is the 12th Surmang Gharwang Rinpoche. Today the line is represented in Malaysia, Taiwan, China, Sikkim and Nepal in addition to its origin in Tibet . A well-known lama from the Surmang Kagyu tradition was also the 11th Drungpa Trülku Chögyam Drungpa .
