Area of responsibility (aviation)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An area of responsibility is an airspace of defined dimensions (horizontal and vertical) in which a single air traffic control unit is responsible for the provision of air traffic control services.

description

Every radar station in aviation has an associated airspace in which it is responsible for radar guidance, flight information and emergency services. Until the beginning of 2008, there was only an internal agreement between Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) and the Bundeswehr as to which body is responsible for which airspace. Since February 29, 2008, the agreed military airspaces around military airfields have been published. This is intended to enable civil aviation participants to receive traffic information from the point that is responsible for the airspace flown through and therefore also knows the intentions of the radar-guided aircraft there. This is particularly important where jet-powered aircraft have to be canalized for final approach or take-off, to or from a military base, in class "E" airspace that is controlled but approved for flights according to visual flight rules .
The associated airspace around a military airfield is named after the responsible facility. The word “jurisdiction” is commonly abbreviated. For example, the airspace around the Celle Army Airfield is published as "ZB Celle".
