The Second Philippine Republic , officially known as the Republic of the Philippines or known in the Philippines as the Philippine Republic Tolerated by Japan , was a puppet state that was established on October 14, 1943 during the Japanese occupation . Jose P. Laurel was the appointed president.

history

In 1941/42 Filipino and American soldiers fought in vain against the invading Japanese army (→ Battle of the Philippines ). President Manuel L. Quezon declared the state capital Manila to be an “ open city ” and placed it as mayor under the rule of Jorge B. Vargas. The Japanese invaded the city on January 2, 1942 and declared it the capital. After the Battle of Corregidor on May 8, 1942, the last Filipino and American units surrendered. The Japanese General Masaharu Homma , executed in Manila in 1946 , accepted the surrender.

The Philippine constitution, dictated by Japan, was signed on September 4, 1943 and ratified by 117 members of the KALIBAPI in a general assembly two days later . The KALIBAPI was the only politically permitted organization during the Japanese occupation.

On October 20, 1944, the US armed forces returned to the Philippines under the leadership of General Douglas MacArthur , who was the military commander of the islands before the Japanese took over. On September 2, 1945, the Japanese officially surrendered.

The new independent republic of the Philippines was officially proclaimed on July 4, 1946. It remained militarily and economically closely linked to the United States for decades.
