Onion chopper

Herb chopper

An onion chopper (sometimes also known as Zyliss , after the company of the same name that invented this device in 1953) is a kitchen device for chopping onions and kitchen herbs.

An onion chopper has a very simple structure: It consists of a cylindrical body, a knife bent in a zigzag and a handle with which the knives are operated. Pressing the handle moves the knife down and cuts the wood chips. When released, a return spring combined with a spiral mechanism causes the knives to be rotated slightly around the axis and guided through a stripping plate, so that the wood chips remain in front of the knife and are cut at a different angle the next time the knife is pressed down.

Professional cooks reject onion choppers because of the uneven and rather coarse pieces of onion, and the onions are slightly crushed when chopping, which means that the onion takes on a slightly bitter taste.
