bunq is a European fintech bank based in the Netherlands that specializes in managing accounts via smartphone . The company was founded in 2015 by Ali Niknam, previous founder of the IT company TransIP.
Business alignment
bunq offers private and business accounts internationally and focuses on bank accounts .
bunq offers a range of online financial services, mainly through its own mobile app . With the company's app, customers can open a free current account with their own IBAN or up to 25 accounts for a monthly fee. In addition, customers can request money from friends, split bills, make payments through real-time transfer , and pay with Apple Pay and Google Pay .
The account opening process can be completed by charging or video chat and ideally takes around five minutes. After setting up an account, the user can send payments to IBANs, phone numbers, and email addresses of contacts. A user can also request money from contacts or create group accounts.
As part of the premium subscription, customers can receive up to three cards, Maestro, Master debit cards or a Master credit card that works like a debit card but is recognized as a credit card. In addition, the app also enables users to pay using a QR code . By scanning a QR code, payments can be made in real time to users or retailers who also have an account with the bank.
In February 2017, bunq released its API and SDK so that users and developers can build apps for financial services.

bunq started as a payment service provider with Slice and now also offers full current accounts in the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy and France. bunq received an official banking license from the Dutch central bank in 2015 . With the banking license, customers can receive their own IBAN, receive salaries in their account and send payments to bank accounts in the EU via IBAN and BIC .
history
Bunq was founded in 2012 after Ali Niknam founded the web hosting company TransIP in 2003. At the end of 2015, the company had 60 employees, mostly IT staff, but also two bankers who previously worked at the Royal Bank of Scotland . Working with experienced bankers was a prerequisite for being granted the banking license.
In September 2015, bunq raised seed investment funds amounting to 16.7 million euros. The first beta version of the app was launched on a limited scale. The app was then made available to the public in November 2015. In November 2015, bunq was named “ WhatsApp for Banking” by the nrc.nl website .
In December 2015, it was revealed that the app was storing unprotected photo IDs on Android cell phones so that other apps on the same device could access them. The security issue was fixed shortly after it was discovered.
In August 2017, bunq introduced a new pricing plan that includes three cards and 25 full-fledged accounts for a fixed fee per month.
In December 2017, bunq started Instant Payments (implementation of SCT Instant), a system that allows users to transfer money to other bank accounts and banks in Europe in a matter of seconds.
In March 2018, bunq introduced Freedom of Choice , which allows customers of the bank to choose how their money should be invested. With this feature, mass interest was also introduced, which enables customers to receive interest on the balances stored at bunq.
In May 2019, bunq introduced the Travel Card , with which bank customers can receive a payment card that works like a debit card, but appears as a credit card for sellers and payment providers. This can be used as one of the three cards that can be used in the premium subscription.
