Part of the Höga Kusten , the Skuleskogen , has been a national park since 1984 .

The Moälven flows through the municipality .

history

The municipality has its roots in the town of the same name, Örnsköldsvik . The name of the city is derived from Governor Per Abraham Örnsköld (1762–1769). The city was founded in 1842 as a trading center ( Köping ) and was granted city rights in 1894.

economy

The community is a traditional industrial community. Locations are the main town Örnsköldsvik, Domsjö, Husum, Mellansel and Själevad. Dominant industrial companies are M-real (wood processing and paper industry) and the Hägglund Group (armaments industry) with several industrial plants around which a supplier industry has developed. Hägglunds Drives in Mellansel (now part of the Bosch Rexroth Group ) exports its hydraulic motors all over the world.

Many of the large companies in Örnsköldsvik produce for export and Örnsköldsvik Municipality has a 3.5% share of total Swedish exports.

Attractions

Around Örnsköldsvik there are a few villages with old churches that are well worth seeing. These include Grundsunda with a 13th century church, Bredbyn , Arnäs , Gideå , Köpmanholmen and Själevad . Free-standing wooden bell towers are typical of Norrland churches.

Skuleskogen National Park is located south of Örnsköldsvik . To the west of this is the Skuleberget , to which a cable car leads and from which you have a good view of the Höga Kusten area.

From Köpmanholmen 14 kilometers south of Örnsköldsvik there are boat connections to the islands of Trysunda and Ulvön . There are old fishing villages of the Gävle fishermen . The fishermen's chapels on the islands also date from this time, and the Ulvö gamla chapel is an architectural monument.
