A Momentary Lapse of Reason is the title of an album by the English rock group Pink Floyd , released on September 7, 1987. The title is a quote from the track One Slip contained on the album . After its release, the album reached number 3 in the music charts in Great Britain and the USA and number 2 in Germany. Part of the recordings on the record took place in David Gilmour's studio: the Astoria houseboat .

Emergence

Astoria , where most of the recordings for the record were made.

The album was Bob Ezrin and David Gilmour produced , the cover was designed by Storm Thorgerson designed. It was Pink Floyd's first album after the lawyers of former bassist and songwriter Roger Waters (in vain) declared the band disbanded in 1985. Most of the pieces were written by David Gilmour and Anthony Moore . Gilmour Waters proposed Yet Another Movie for The Final Cut in 1983 , but it was rejected.

Both fans and critics were initially very critical of the album, because the departure of Waters was based on the assumption that Pink Floyd would lose the creative force behind it. Gilmour was all the more determined to present a "Floydian" album again after the disappointing The Final Cut , and despite the ongoing legal battle with Roger Waters, did not shy away from using his own financial resources as well as various co-songwriters and guest musicians to achieve this . An additional piquant circumstance was the collaboration of Bob Ezrin on the album, but Waters raised the charge that Ezrin had first given him (Waters) the promise to produce his album " Radio KAOS ".

The piece Peace Be With You , which was intended as a conciliatory farewell song to Waters, was also to appear on the album . Ultimately, however, it was not released.

At the beginning of the recordings, Pink Floyd consisted only of Gilmour and the last remaining founding member, Nick Mason . Keyboardist Richard Wright , who was pushed out of the band by Roger Waters at the end of the production of " The Wall " in 1979 , returned to the band while recording A Momentary Lapse of Reason . He played the keyboard on the song Sorrow , among others , where his vocals can be heard in the background. He also brought in a keyboard solo on On the turning away , which was canceled by Gilmour. Since Wright did not officially join the band at first, he is only listed as a guest musician in early editions of the album. On the tour for the album, however, as in later editions of the album, he was again noted as a full band member. Numerous studio musicians were also involved in the recordings, some of whom made their contributions in Great Britain and others in Los Angeles.

reception

Commercially, the album, unlike Gilmour's solo releases, was a great success, as was the subsequent world tour. Even if the album ultimately showed that Waters was missing as Gilmour's partner and opponent (just as, conversely, Waters' dominance was noticeable on the last joint album The Final Cut ), in retrospect it can be seen as a typical, highly polished work of the late 1980s Years apply. The album is controversial with many fans: While the return to flat, spherical sounds was generally welcomed, many critics and fans complain about weaknesses in the song material. In terms of the lyrics in particular, the pieces from "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" are disappointing compared to the Waters-dominated albums. Titles like Sorrow and Yet Another Movie are still valued by many fans to this day.

A remixed version of the album was released at the end of 2019, in which the 1980s synthesizers, which are otherwise atypical for Pink Floyd, take a back seat. Nick Mason also played several new drum parts.
