With the XIII. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid , six alpine skiing competitions were held. Whiteface Mountain was the venue for all races . The top three in downhill, giant slalom and slalom received not only Olympic medals but also world championship medals, as these competitions were also classified as the 26th  Alpine World Ski Championships. In the Alpine Combined, only World Championship medals were awarded.

Allegations against the ski industry

There were allegations of manipulation against the industry in advance. It was said that the outfitters (especially ski manufacturers) would make faster skis available to certain runners and slower skis to others and thus influence the results. Especially Irene Epple with an Austrian product had achieved slow times, which had raised these doubts.

Olympic Champion 1976 : Franz Klammer (AUT) - not in the Austrian Olympic squad / World Champion 1978: Josef Walcher (AUT) - not included

47 participants, 42 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: Ken Read (CAN), Toni Bürgler (SUI).

The race did not start with Harti Weirather drawn as No. 1 , but with six so-called star drivers (with No. 42, Bolivian Scott Alan Sánchez was the first to take to the track). At temperatures of minus 10 ° C there had been a light drifting snow. But No. 1 was also a bad number that day, Weirather had no chance of a good time.

The favorites, due to the current World Cup score, were Peter Müller, who led with 96 points ahead of Ken Read (81) and Harti Weirather (64). Behind Walcher and Håker (60 each) were Wirnsberger (57) and Plank (56); The next one was Podborski (23), a long way off, and Stock had only picked up eleven points once (in the first race in Wengen) with fifth place due to his injury story. He was practically only nominated as a substitute by the ÖSV , but was able to set the best times in the training sessions and internal qualifications, whereupon he was allowed to go to the start, with which the originally intended Josef Walcher had to watch. For Stock it was the first ever victory in a major race . Franz Klammer, the Olympic champion on Patscherkofel in 1976, was not in the Austrian squad due to an almost permanent lack of World Cup results.

Olympic Champion 1976: Heini Hemmi (SUI) - career ended / World Champion 1978 : Ingemar Stenmark (SWE)

78 participants, 54 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: 1st run: Jean-Luc Fournier (SUI), Peter Lüscher (SUI), Mauro Bernadi (ITA); disqu .: Paul Frommelt (LIE).

2nd run: Piero Gros (ITA), Valeri Zyganow (URS), Jože Kuralt (YUG).

Stenmark was the clear favorite because he had won the three World Cup competitions so far and was leading with 75 points ahead of Lüthy (51) and Križaj 35; Enn (27) was in 5th place, Wenzel (14) in 10th place. Winner Stenmark was already well ahead in the first run, but got into trouble near the finish line - so it turned out that from the last intermediate time Enn was the fastest in 28.46 seconds before Wenzel in 28.73 seconds the Swede was only measured with 29.52 seconds - and thus "only" came third. - Already in the first run Fournier, Bernadi and Lüscher (this one due to a fall shortly before the finish line) were eliminated.

Since the second run had started with the “super bibbo rule”, the medal ranks seemed to have been awarded for the time being, but Hans Enn suddenly had to tremble: The sixth-placed Valeri Zyganow had the second-best intermediate time, but fell in the penultimate goal; Križaj followed immediately, who failed on the podium by 0.02 seconds.

79 participants, 37 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: 1st run: Joël Gaspoz , Peter Lüscher (both SUI), Steve Mahre (USA), Bruno Nöckler , Paolo De Chiesa (both ITA), Alexander Schirow (URS), Paul Frommelt (LIE), Konrad Bartelski (GBR ); disqualified: Christian Orlainsky (AUT), Bojan Križaj (YUG).
2nd run: Mauro Bernardi (ITA), Boris Strel (YUG), Stig Strand (SWE); disqualified: Albert Burger (FRG).

Although Stenmark was also the “gold favorite” for the slalom among ski journalists, the previous five season slaloms had been highly controversial (in contrast to the giant slalom, there had been “only” two Stenmark victories), which was 88 in the ranking Knocked down 85 points from Križaj; the other places were taken by Wenzel (51) and Lüthy (43) - Phil Mahre was 10th with 29 points.
The Swede, fourth after the first run, however, still managed to win a clear victory. The balance of the Austrians was "despite" the possible medal for Enn (0.06 sec. Back - but which on the other hand was compensated by the luck from the previous giant slalom, when he secured bronze with 0.02 sec.), Satisfactory, whereby Orlainsky had missed a big chance due to his concentration error just before the finish in the first run (there could have been the fastest time). Leonhard Stock drove two safety runs to get combination bronze. Actually Križaj had achieved the fourth-best time in the first half, but made a goal error because of an outside influence; the Yugoslav team leadership did not raise any objection (which would have included the possible possibility of a repeat run; this incident was reminiscent of Grenoble in 1968, when Karl Schranz had suffered a similar mishap). For the Swiss team, Lüthy's bronze medal was the first men's medal in an Olympic slalom since Edy Reinalter's gold in 1948.

Olympic champion 1976 : Rosi Mittermaier (FRG) - career already ended; World Champion 1978 : Annemarie Moser-Pröll (AUT)

28 participants, 27 of them in the evaluation. Eliminated: Caroline Attia (FRA).

The season balance of Marie-Theres Nadig, which had six of the possible seven overall victories (Moser-Pröll had won this other victory) with a maximum of 125 points against the Austrian (100) up to the descent here on Whiteface Mountain, made clear her favorite position . Hanni Wenzel was third with 66 points.
Nadig had the last training session in 1: 46.76 ahead of Moser-Pröll (1: 47.04), Preuss (1: 48.01), De Agostini (1: 48.29), Conny Pröll (1: 48.58), Irene Epple (1: 48.65), Flanders (1: 48.81), Nelson (1: 48.97), Bernadette Zurbriggen (1: 49.26) and Wenzel (1: 49.30), but Moser-Pröll drove the final part upright and with swings. The race took place at 20 degrees Celsius - and this cold was multiplied on the drive, where there were gusts of wind at 50 km / h. For the time being, there was even a threat of the race being postponed before the jury approved the start at the scheduled time. In the first statements, Nadig stated that the strong headwind cost her a second in the middle part.

Olympic Champion 1976 : Kathy Kreiner (CAN) - career ended / World Champion 1978 : Maria Epple (FRG)

47 participants, 35 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: Wanda Bieler (ITA), Ursula Konzett (LIE), Tamara McKinney (USA), Regina Sackl (AUT), Marie-Theres Nadig (SUI) (all in the 1st run); Erika Hess (SUI), Regine Mösenlechner (FRG), Maria Rosa Quario , Daniela Zini (both ITA) (all in the 2nd run) - not started for the 2nd run: Lea Sölkner (AUT)

Wenzel with four wins and a 5th place (111 points in the World Cup ranking list) was the clear favorite; Pelen was second with 86 points, ahead of Hess (70). Irene Epple was placed behind Giordani (36) with 34 points (equal to Moser-Pröll).
After the first run, the runners from at least 5th place no longer had a chance of gold. Due to falls, u. a. Nadig and Sackl (both in the same place) as well as McKinney, Zini and Konzett were eliminated. Striking in the second run was the battle for the bronze medal, whereby in the narrow French duel Perinne Pelen versus Fabienne Serrat, after only 2/100 seconds in favor of Serrats after run one, Pelen was now 3/100 seconds faster and therefore 0.01 for them sec. made the difference. (Such a close duel in the medal ranks had been recorded in the fight for gold in the women's slalom in 1972.) Moser-Pröll might also have achieved the bronze medal (in the meantime she had been in second place in this run), but - as in the first run - it fell back in the lower (flat) part of the route. Because of her illness Lea Sölkner did not take part in the second run.

Olympic Champion 1976 : Rosi Mittermaier (FRG) - career ended / World Champion 1978 : Lea Sölkner (AUT)

47 participants, 19 of them in the rating. Retired u. a .: Marie-Theres Nadig (SUI), Regina Sackl , Lea Sölkner , Annemarie Moser-Pröll (all AUT), Pamela Behr , Regine Mösenlechner (both FRG), Ursula Konzett (LIE), Torill Fjeldstad (NOR), Jana Gantnerová (TCH / ČSSR), Anne-Flore Rey (FRA), Tamara McKinney (USA) (all in the 1st run); Perrine Pelen , Fabienne Serrat (both FRA), Irene Epple (FRG), Abigail Fisher (USA) (all in the 2nd run).

The favorites were the previous season winners Perinne Pelen (110 points) and Hanni Wenzel (82 - the latter was third in the ranking behind Moser-Pröll with 83), but in view of the surprises Erika Hess (with 37 points in 6th place), Fabienne Serrat and Claudia Giordani in focus. On the part of the ÖSV women, only Moser-Pröll (due to their third place in the intermediate placement) had expected more; Regina Sackl had not been in the top six in any of the season's slaloms, Lea Sölkner had only just got over a feverish cold and Ingrid Eberle's goal of a combination medal had to be factored in. In terms of gold, the second run came to a head in a duel between Wenzel and Kinshofer, who is actually known as a giant slalom specialist. The German ranks 10th in Bad Gastein and Maribor and 11th in St. Gervais (17 points). A major attack on Patrakeyeva, surprisingly in third place, was expected from Pelen; But Pelen fell, and since the URS runner showed too bad a performance, the way was clear for Hess. Of the Austrians, only Eberle came into the rankings, all others were eliminated after the first run due to a fall.
