history
Altfriedland is first mentioned in a document as Vredelant in 1271 when the Cistercians established a nunnery. He owned up to ten surrounding villages. The monastery was dissolved by secularization in 1546 . The Friedland Office was formed from the monastery property. As a typical street village , the economic boom already played a major role in the development of the place in the Middle Ages. Later expanded to include a knight's seat, Altfriedland received town charter, which was revoked from it in 1565. In gratitude for his share in the victory in the Battle of Torgau , Hans Sigismund von Lestwitz was enfeoffed with Friedland in 1763 and given a gift in 1769. The place was named Altfriedland in 1845 because the Neufriedland colony was founded in the neighboring Oderbruch in 1802 . Under Henriette Charlotte von Itzenplitz , at the beginning of the 19th century, the Friedland estates were developed into model farms through the influence of Albrecht Thaer . The annual Altfriedland fishing festival with the traditional fishing parade on the first weekend in August is a reminder of the historic Kietz Altfriedland .
