The Am Sundern nature reserve is located about 1 kilometer north of Greffen , a district of the East Westphalian town of Harsewinkel in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . The area is approximately 7.3 hectares and was placed under protection on April 1, 1986 under the key number GT-013.

In 1977 there were the first considerations to redesign the area of a wood waste dump in an ecological way. The city of Harsewinkel developed a plan with official and voluntary conservationists and the Office for Agricultural Regulations in Bielefeld , which was included in the plan approval procedure in 1982 . With public funds from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Harsewinkel, the biotope could then be built until 1984.

A diverse relief was created that offers dwarf rushes and other aquatic plants a vegetation space. Wet meadows and sedge groves form a habitat for a wide variety of animal and plant species.
