The Holter Wald nature reserve is a large, contiguous forest area on the eastern edge of the Westphalian Bay . With a size of 613.14 hectares, it is located in the area of the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock in the Gütersloh district . The protection took place on October 16, 2008, the area is led with the number GT-040.

The Holter Forest is a preferred local recreation area for residents of the surrounding cities and communities and is largely designated as a landscape protection area. It is traversed from east to west by the Senne brooks Landerbach (in the north of the Holter Forest), Ölbach (in the center) and Rodenbach (in the south). The subsoil consists almost exclusively of sandy soils, which are typical of the Senne landscape. Therefore, there is predominantly a Senne-typical tree population consisting of pines , oaks and beeches . Moisture-loving tree species such as alder and ash can also be found in the immediate vicinity of the banks of the streams and bodies of water .

Popular starting points

The Holter Forest as an FFH area

315 hectares of the nature reserve are also a fauna-flora-habitat (FFH) area . This is justified, among other things, with the occurrence of rare animal species such as the black woodpecker , kingfisher and various bat species as well as the occurrence of small-scale bog soils with their typical vegetation . As a result, the Holter Forest functions as a so-called stepping stone biotope in the otherwise forest-poor Westphalian Bay . The main objectives of the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive with regard to the Holter Forest are near-natural forest management, the preservation of cave trees as nesting sites for rare bird species, and the natural preservation of the flowing and still water sections of Ölbach and Landerbach .
