In July 2007 he ventured to Europe and signed with the Spanish club Deportivo La Coruña . He played there for five years before joining Valencia CF. After a six-month lending Intermezzo at Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen , he joined in the summer of 2014 the Dutch PSV Eindhoven on. Since July 2017 he has been wearing the jersey of the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla .

Guardado has been the Mexican national player since December 2005 and has been captain since 2015. He took part in four world championships and various other competitions. Of four participations in the Gold Cup , he was able to win three with the El Tri - 2011 , 2015 and 2019 . He is now the second most frequently used player with over 150 international appearances, behind Claudio Suárez with 177 appearances.

In his home country he is known by the nickname Principito (Little Prince).

Club career

Atlas Guadalajara

Born in Guadalajara , Jalisco , Guardado began playing football with the local Atlas Guadalajara club , which he joined in 1993 when he was seven. There he played in various junior teams until he was promoted to the first team squad for the 2005/06 season . Under head coach Daniel Guzmán he made his debut on August 20, 2005 in a 3-2 home win against CF Pachuca in the top Mexican division, when he came into play in the 75th minute for Marcelo Macedo . The young midfielder established himself in the starting line-up in his first season and became one of the most sensational players in his home country.

He retained his status as a regular player in the next 2006/07 season and was already observed by top Italian teams in June 2006 . However, a change did not take place and Guardado stayed with Atlas for the time being. On August 20, 2006 (3rd matchday of Apertura) he scored both goals in a 2-0 home win against Club America . In two years Guardado played 64 league games for the Zorros , in which he scored six goals.

Deportivo La Coruña

On July 7, 2007, the 20-year-old Guardado finally ventured into Europe and joined the Spanish first division club Deportivo La Coruña . The Galician club secured 75% of the midfielder's transfer rights for a transfer fee of seven million euros, while the remaining quarter remained with their youth club, Atlas. This made him the most expensive Mexican player of all time for three weeks, as this record was broken by Nery Castillo at the end of July 2007 , for whom Shakhtar Donetsk paid € 20 million. On August 26, 2007 (1st matchday) he made his debut in the 3-0 home defeat against UD Almería in the Primera División. He scored for Dépor for the first time on Matchday 3 when he scored the golden goal in a 1-0 home win against Betis Sevilla . He quickly rose to become an important regular player and ended the 2007/08 season with five goals, which he achieved in 26 league games. La Coruñas ninth place in the league was enough to participate in the UEFA Intertoto Cup 2008 , through which one could qualify for the UEFA Cup .

In the first league game of the 2008/09 season , he prepared both goals for his team in the surprising 2-1 home win against Real Madrid . After participating in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup via the UI Cup and regular qualification, he played his first game in an international competition on September 18 in the 2-0 away defeat against Norwegian club Brann Bergen . He scored his first goal in this on November 27 in a 3-0 home win in the group game against Feyenoord Rotterdam . In the spring of 2009 he had to take a month and a half off because of a torn muscle fiber. Nevertheless, he came this season in 29 league games in which he scored two goals and assisted eight more goals. In the league they were classified in seventh place in the table and thus narrowly missed the qualification for international business.

The start of the following season 2009/10 was promising, as eight of the first 12 league games were won and Deportivo found themselves in the top of the table. On November 21 (11th matchday), Guardado converted a penalty in the 95th minute of the game at home in Estadio Riazor to make it 2-1 against league rivals Atlético Madrid . Then you fell into a negative spiral. In addition, midfield engine Guardado suffered a muscle injury for the third time since arriving in mid-January 2010 and had to watch four games. At the end of the season an adductor injury forced him to end the season prematurely. By then he had played in 26 league games and had scored three goals and prepared five in these. Deportivo ultimately fell back to 10th place in the table.

On September 20, 2010 (3rd matchday) Guardado scored both goals of his team in a 2-2 draw against Getafe FC . The start of the season was catastrophic. Dépor won none of the first eight games of the season and found himself with four points in the relegation ranks. Guardado himself had been unable to play since the seventh matchday due to a torn muscle and missed nine league games in two months. On his return on December 18 in the league game against Sporting Gijón , he had to be replaced after half an hour injured. This injury to his left thigh put him out of action for another three months. After his recovery, he could not help his club to turn around, on the contrary, La Coruña slipped further and further in the remainder of the 2010/11 season . The relegation after 20 years of first class was sealed with the 0-2 home defeat against Valencia CF on the last day of the match. Guardado played 20 league games this season and collected two goals and as many assists. Long-time head coach Miguel Ángel Lotina , who, like him , came to Dépor in the summer of 2007 , went with the relegation .

Despite the relegation to the second-rate Segunda División and the countless people interested in a commitment Guardado, this remained loyal to his club and went with him into the 2011/12 season . The central midfielder was more successful as a goalscorer than in previous seasons. Between late November 2011 and early 2012, he scored five goals in six league games. At that time, the team had already emerged as a clear aspirant for promotion and ultimately took the lead in mid-January 2012. On March 27, 2012 Guardado announced that he would leave the Branquiazuis regardless of their success this season after their end. Deportivo La Coruña did not give up the first place in the table and returned to the top class. Guardado made a decisive contribution with eleven goals in 36 league games. He was also elected the best player of the season within the club and received the award for the best offensive midfielder in the league .

In June 2012 he left Deportivo La Coruña after 149 competitive games, in which he scored 25 goals and prepared 20.

Valencia CF

On May 28, 2012 Andrés Guardado signed a four-year contract with the first division club Valencia CF , which secured his services free of charge. He made his debut on August 19, 2012 (1st matchday) in a 1-1 draw with Real Madrid . On September 19, 2012, he made his debut in a 2-1 away defeat by Bayern Munich in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League . In this 2012/13 season he was hardly used in his traditional position in central midfield, but was more of a left full-back or left winger . This came about due to the serious injury of left defender Jérémy Mathieu . After a weak start in this, after the dismissal of Mauricio Pellegrino under his successor Ernesto Valverde , Valencia pushed back into the ranks for international business. On May 12, 2013 (35th matchday) he scored his first goal for Valencia in a 4-0 away win against Rayo Vallecano and prepared another goal. Valencia missed qualifying for the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League due to a 4-3 away defeat by Sevilla FC in the absence of Guardados on the final matchday . Because of this, coach Valverde was dismissed and replaced by Miroslav Đukić . Guardado finished the season with 32 league games in which he scored a goal.

In the following Primera División 2013/14 he was still used by Đukić as a left-back, but was not used in every league game due to the competition of the young Juan Bernat . After Valencia had the worst start to the season in 15 years with just six wins in their first 16 league games, Miroslav Đukić was relieved of his duties in mid-December 2013 in response. His replacement Juan Antonio Pizzi put him back on a regular basis.

Loan to Bayer 04 Leverkusen

Despite this, he was loaned to the German Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen on January 30, 2014 for the remainder of the 2013/14 season. The Werkself also planned him as a left full-back and also secured an option to continue signing Guardado beyond the summer. He made his debut on February 12, 2014 in the surprising 1-0 home defeat against the second division club 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the DFB Cup . In the league, he only sat on the bench for the time being. In the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain , he was on the pitch over the full distance in both games. Both games were lost 0: 4 and 1: 2 respectively. He made his debut in the Bundesliga on March 23, 2014 (26th match day) in a 2: 3 home defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim . In the rest of the season he played three more league games and then returned to Valencia CF, as Leverkusen did not take the purchase option. In this 2013/14 season Guardado had to struggle with minor injuries and loss of form.

PSV Eindhoven

Andrés Guardado in a Champions League game against Zenit St. Petersburg in February 2015

On August 26, 2014 Guardado moved to PSV Eindhoven on loan to the Netherlands for the entire 2014/15 season . The honorary division secured a purchase option for the player. He made his league debut on August 31 (4th matchday) 2-0 home win against Vitesse Arnhem . At his new club he was back in the central midfield . On March 7, 2015 (26th matchday), he scored his first goal for the Boeren in a 3-0 away win against the Go Ahead Eagles . In this 2014/15 season he performed significantly better than in the two seasons at FC Valencia and Bayer 04 Leverkusen. In the home game against FC Groningen on matchday 27, the PSV supporters dedicated a Tifo to him , which showed the Mexican flag and spoke out clearly for his whereabouts. On March 27, it was announced that Andrés Guardado is moving permanently to Eindhoven . On June 1, 2015, he was supposed to start a three-year contract. Already three games before the end of the season, the club won the Dutch championship with a 4-1 home win against SC Heerenveen . During this 2014/15 season he played 28 league games in which he scored once. Due to his strong performance, he was named the best player of the season by AD and Voetbal International magazines .

On August 2, 2015, he came on as a substitute for Jürgen Locadia in the 3-0 win against FC Groningen in the Dutch Supercup in the closing stages . In this 2015/16 season he kept his place as an undisputed regular player, although his performance did not deteriorate due to minor injuries. He scored his first and only goal of the season on October 31, 2015 (11th matchday) in a 6-3 away win against BV De Graafschap . On January 24, 2016 (19th matchday), he prepared three goals in a 4-2 home win against FC Twente Enschede . In this season PSV lost only two league games and successfully defended the championship title with a 3-1 away win against PEC Zwolle on the last day of the match. Guardado had another strong season, contributing one goal and eleven assists in 25 league games.

The following season 2016/17 started successfully for Guardado and the Boeren . With a 1-0 win against Feyenoord Rotterdam , they won the Dutch Super Cup again and were present in the race for the championship title from the start. On March 11, 2017 (26th matchday), he scored in a 3-1 away win against the Go Ahead Eagles for the first time this season. On April 9 (30th matchday) he met again in a 5-0 home win against Willem II Tilburg and prepared three more goals. Although PSV Eindhoven only suffered two defeats, they were ranked third behind champions Feyenoord Rotterdam and runner-up Ajax Amsterdam .

In the three years at PSV Eindhoven he played 102 competitive games and collected four goals and 22 assists in these.

Betis Seville

In the summer of 2017, the 30-year-old Andrés Guardado was associated with a move to Major League Soccer , the top US division. The two franchises Atlanta United and Los Angeles FC are said to have registered their interest with PSV. On July 27, 2017, he put an end to these rumors by announcing his return to Spain, where he signed a three-year deal with Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla . The Andalusian club paid a transfer fee of 2.3 million euros for the services of the Mexican. On August 19, 2017, he was appointed Deputy Captain Joaquín . He made his debut on August 20, 2017 (1st matchday) in the 2-0 away defeat against FC Barcelona . Guardado prepared both goals in a 2-1 home win against Celta Vigo five days later. He succeeded again in the 4-4 draw against Real Sociedad on October 1 (7th matchday). Guardado quickly established himself as an important regular in midfield at the Verdiblancos . The first goal for his new employer was on November 29th (matchday 13) in a 2-2 draw against FC Girona . A second time he netted in the 2: 3 away defeat against Celta Vigo on matchday 21. In the second half of the season he missed a few games due to minor injury concerns, but kept coming back to the starting line-up of head coach Quique Setién . He concluded the 2017/18 season with 29 appearances in the league, in which he scored two goals and assisted in eight other goals. With sixth place in the table, the team qualified for the group stage of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League . During his first season at Betis he was accompanied by the producers of the Six Dreams series , which, alongside him, also spanned the lives of the two football players Saúl Ñíguez (Spain, Atlético Madrid ) and Iñaki Williams (Spain, Athletic Bilbao ), the coach Eduardo Berizzo (Argentina , until December 2017 at FC Sevilla ), the club president Amaia Gorostiza (Spain, SD Eibar ) and the sporting director Quique Cárcel (Spain, FC Girona) illuminated.

In the first two league games of the next 2018/19 season , he wore the captain's armband, as Joaquín was not listed in the matchday squad. He should take over the loop a few more times during the entire playing time. As in the previous season, he had to take breaks due to injuries this season. In general, the playing time for Betis and Guardado was not satisfactory. In the Europa League they failed in the sixteenth finals at the French club Stade Rennes and in the league they were classified in midfield in tenth place, which clearly missed the qualification for international business. In response, head coach Quique Setién was sacked after the last match day. Guardado has appeared in 31 league games this season, in which he was unsuccessful and provided four assists.

Under the new coach Rubi , he retained his status as a regular player for the next 2019/20 season . In early December 2019, 33-year-old Guardado extended his contract with Betis until 2022.

National team

Beginnings and first World Cup in 2006

At the age of 19, Andrés Guardado made his debut on December 14, 2005 in a 2-0 win in a friendly international match against Hungary in the Mexican national team , when he came on in the 69th minute for José Antonio Olvera . The next year he was used in other friendly matches and was finally nominated by head coach Ricardo La Volpe in the Mexican squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . In this tournament he was not used in the group stage, but was brought in by La Volpe in the round of 16 against Argentina from the start. After 67 minutes he was substituted for Gonzalo Pineda due to an injury and could not prevent the 2-1 defeat after extra time.

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he scored three goals in 15 appearances and prepared two more goals. At the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009 he was not included in the Mexican squad. The new head coach Javier Aguirre included Guardado in the spring of 2010 in various preparatory games for the finals in South Africa , in which he was able to score a goal. On June 2, 2010, he was nominated by Aguirre in Mexico's final squad. In the opening game of the World Cup against hosts South Africa , he came on in the 55th minute for Paul Aguilar and prepared the goal to equalize 1: 1 by Rafael Márquez . After he was not taken into account in the 2-0 win in the second group game against France , he was in the 0-1 defeat against Uruguay until half-time. In the round of 16 they lost 3-1 to Argentina and Mexico was eliminated from the tournament. Guardado played until the 61st minute of the game.

After Aguirre left the Mexican national team after the World Cup, Guardado played an essential role in friendly matches from August 2010 to June 2011 under the interim coaches Efraín Flores and Enrique Meza and the new head coach José Manuel de la Torre and was awarded gold by de la Torre for the CONCACAF Cup 2011 in the United States nominated. Despite the drug scandal during the tournament when five players tested positive for Clenbuterol and were subsequently banned, Mexico started the tournament strong with three wins and won the group by a superior margin. Guardado scored twice in the third group game in the 4-1 win against Costa Rica. Guardado was in the starting line-up for the victories in the final round against Guatemala and Honduras . In the final against the USA he scored in the 36th minute of the game to make it 2-2 and in the 50th minute prepared Pablo Barrera's 3-2 opening goal . Mexico eventually won 4-2 and Guardado won their first competition with Mexico.

In the 2011 Copa América Guardado was not considered.

World Championship 2014

In qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , Mexico suffered severe weaknesses and only won one game of the first six games in the fourth qualifying round. In June he competed with El Tri in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, where they were eliminated in the group stage. At the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup , he did not take part in the Mexico in the semifinals of Panama failed. Although they managed only one win in the remaining four qualifiers, they qualified for the intercontinental play-offs against New Zealand . Head coach de la Torre was sacked during this period of weakness and his successor Víctor Manuel Vucetich was fired after the last qualifier. In the absence of Guardado, Mexico beat New Zealand twice clearly and qualified for the finals of the World Cup in Brazil with an overall score of 9-3. On March 6, 2014 Andrés Guardado played his 100th international match for Mexico in a 0-0 draw against Nigeria .

He was called up to the Mexican squad for the 2014 World Cup by new coach Miguel Herrera . At the tournament he started in all three group games. In the third group game against Croatia , he scored his first goal in a World Cup finals. In the 1: 2 defeat in the round of 16 against the Netherlands Guardado was on the field over the full distance.

Second win at the 2015 Gold Cup

Andrés Guardado at the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015

On September 7, 2014 Guardado led his home country in his 109th international match as captain for the first time as captain in a 0-0 draw in a friendly friendly against Chile . He was not included in Mexico's squad for the 2015 Copa America .

He took part again in the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States and Canada and led El Tri into the tournament as captain. In the first game in the 6-0 win against Cuba , he scored a goal and prepared another goal. He was able to repeat this in the 4-4 draw against Trinidad & Tobago in the third group game. In the quarter-finals against Costa Rica, Mexico received a controversial penalty in the 124th minute of the game , which Guardado safely used. The mood in the semi-final game against Panama became more heated when Mexico, who were 1-0 down, was awarded a penalty in the closing stages of regular time. After a clarification action, Panamanian Ramón Torres fell with his hand on the ball, which referee Mark Geiger considered a handball. The penalty was used after protests by the Panamanian players and a minute-long break in the 10th minute of added time by Guardado, so the game went into overtime. In the 105th minute of the game, Guardado converted another controversial penalty to make it 2-1, with Mexico reaching the final. In the 3-1 win in the final against Jamaica , he scored his sixth goal in the competition and won the Gold Cup for the second time after 2011.

Coach Miguel Herrera was sacked two days after the final after attacking a journalist at the airport. Under his successor Juan Carlos Osorio , they successfully qualified for the 2018 World Cup in Russia and did not lose for a year until they were eliminated from the Copa America Centenario in 2016 .

Copa América Centenario 2016 and fourth World Cup 2018

Andrés Guardado took part with Mexico in the 2016 Copa America Centenario in the United States, where he represented his country as captain. In the 3-1 opening win against Uruguay, Guardado followed in the 73rd minute of play with "yellow-red" and was therefore suspended in the next game. After a draw against Venezuela in the third group game, they met Chile as the group winners in the quarter-finals and lost this game against the eventual winners 7-0.

Qualifying for the 2018 World Cup was much easier for Mexico and El Tri successfully qualified for the finals in Russia as the group first in the fifth qualifying round. He had previously competed with Mexico in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup , where he played in three games and finished fourth with the selection.

At the beginning of June 2018 he was listed in Osorio's 23-man squad for the finals and led the team into the tournament as captain. In the 1-0 opening win against Germany , he was substituted in the 74th minute of the game for the experienced Rafael Márquez. He was also replaced by Márquez in the 2-1 win against South Korea , his 150th international match, and in the 3-0 defeat against Sweden in the third group game, he was substituted for Jesús Corona . In the last sixteen they lost 2-0 to Brazil . After the tournament, he announced that he had played during the World Cup despite an injury. Juan Carlos Osorio left Mexico in July 2018 after his contract expired after three years.

Third victory at the Gold Cup 2019

Under the new head coach Gerardo Martino , Guardado took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the fourth time from June to July 2019 . As captain, he won the opening game against Cuba with Mexico 7-0. In the 3-1 win against Canada in the second group game, he scored twice. As captain, he led the team with another win against Martinique in the quarter-finals, where they could defeat Costa Rica on penalties. With a 1-0 win after extra time against Haiti , they made it into the final. As in the Gold Cup 2015, the penalty goal in the 93rd minute of the game resulted from a discussion-worthy penalty whistle. The final game against the United States was won 1-0, which Guardado could celebrate his third Gold Cup victory.
